According to an NDTV report, Bela Café in Metula near the Lebanon-Israel border continues to operate amid ongoing conflict, offering rare moments of comfort and normal life in a war-affected region.

According to an NDTV report, a small café located in Metula near the Lebanon-Israel border continues to operate despite ongoing cross-border tensions and repeated security threats. The area remains one of the most sensitive conflict zones, where rocket fire, military alerts, and civilian evacuations have become part of daily life.
While most shops in the region remain closed and many residents have left, Bela Café continues to function, offering not just coffee but also a rare sense of normalcy in an otherwise unstable environment.
A Café Operating in a High-Risk Border Zone
Bela Café is situated just a few hundred meters from the Lebanon border, an area frequently affected by rocket warnings and military activity.
Despite the risk, the café remains open whenever conditions allow. Inside, the atmosphere contrasts sharply with the outside world. The smell of coffee, quiet conversations, and brief moments of calm offer visitors a short escape from the tension outside.
At times, operations are interrupted by sirens, forcing customers to take cover. However, life inside the café resumes once the immediate threat passes.
The Woman Behind Bela Café
The café is run by Miria Menash, who manages most of the work on her own. She prepares coffee, serves customers, and maintains the space with consistency and determination.
During the escalation of violence in 2023, she, like many others, temporarily left the town for safety. However, she later returned, choosing to reopen the café despite the risks.
Her decision reflects a deep connection to her home and a belief that leaving completely would mean losing the identity of the place.
Life Between Sirens and Routine
Life in Metula remains unpredictable. Sirens can go off without warning, forcing people inside the café to pause and seek safety.
After a few minutes, when the situation stabilizes, customers often return, and the café continues serving as if trying to preserve fragments of normal life amid chaos.
Outside the café, the town remains largely empty, with closed shops and silent streets.
A Space for Locals and Soldiers
Residents who have chosen to remain in Metula visit the café regularly. For them, it provides emotional stability and a sense of routine.
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) personnel stationed nearby also frequent the café, using it as a brief escape from operational pressure and stress.
In this environment, a simple cup of coffee becomes a symbol of relief and temporary peace.
“A Few Minutes of Normal Life Is My Victory”
Miria Menash sees her café as more than a business. She describes it as a form of quiet resistance against fear and uncertainty.
According to her, while rockets and conflict may continue, the human desire to live normally does not disappear.
She believes that if someone can sit, drink coffee, and smile for even a few minutes, it is a meaningful victory over fear.
A Symbol of Resilience in a Deserted Town
Metula’s streets remain mostly empty, with many homes and businesses closed due to ongoing tensions. Yet Bela Café continues to operate, standing as a rare symbol of resilience in a conflict-affected region.
According to the NDTV report, the café reflects how even in war zones, small spaces of humanity and normal life can still survive.
